Why Annual Diabetic Eye Exams Are Essential

Diabetes is a condition that affects many parts of the body, but one of the most vulnerable—and often overlooked—areas are your eyes. Diabetic eye disease can progress silently and cause irreversible vision loss if not detected early. In fact diabetic eye disease is the number one cause of blindness in working age adults here in Canada. That’s why we recommend annual eye exams for patients with diabetes.

In this blog post, we’ll explore the importance of annual eye exams and how we utilize advanced retinal imaging to change the game when it comes to early detection and management of diabetic eye disease.

The Silent Threat: Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy occurs when elevated blood sugar damages the tiny blood vessels in the retina – that part of the eye that senses light. In the early phases there are often times no symtpoms. However, as the disease progresses it can lead to:

  • Bluured or fluctuating vision
  • Dark or empy areas in your vision
  • Spots in your vision that do not move

It is important to note that early signs of diabetic retinopathy may not affect your vision but are easily detectable with the advanced retinal imagaing that we utilize at Abbey Eye Care

What is Advanced Retinal Imaging?

Advanced retinal imaging tools like Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and Ultra-Widefield imaging allow for:

  • Cross-sectional views of the retinal layers, similar to an ultrasound
  • Detection of microaneurysms, fluid buildup and new blood vessel growth
  • Baseline images to compare year over year

Below are examples of retinal images that are taken at Abbey Eye Care to detect, manage and treat diabetic retinopathy
