Eye Exams for Patients With Diabetes
Diabetes Can Impact Your Vision & Eye Health
Individuals with diabetes have unique eye health and vision care needs and should undergo a diabetic eye exam at least once per year. Diabetes has the potential to cause damage to the small blood vessels in the retina (back of the eye). This can lead to permanent vision loss and early diagnosis is key to a good outcome.
Working With Your Family Doctor and/or Your Endocrinologist
Patients with diabetes need to have a comprehensive eye exam on a yearly basis. We not only assess your vision but take a detailed assessment of the back of the eye. Elevated blood sugar has the potential to cause damage to the small blood vessels in the retina. This is termed diabetic retinopathy. This can lead to vision loss or blindness if not detected early. We use numerous advanced imaging devices to assess the retina. A detailed report will be sent back to your family doctor and your endocrinologist (diabetes specialist) if you have one.
