Radio Frequency (RF) Treatment For Dry Eye Relief

Traditionally, dry eye disease has been treated with artificial tears, hot compresses, and Omega 3 supplements. While this may provide temporary symptom relief it does not get at the root cause of dry eye disease. Poorly functioning meibomian glands are one of the biggest causes of dry eye disease. RF delivers targeted deep heat to the glands greatly improving their function.

How RF Treats Dry Eye

Radio Frequency or RF has been used in dermatology for decades, it delivers targeted heat to the deeper layers of the skin. This reduces fine lines and wrinkles and stimulates new collagen production. Improving the skins overall appearance. For our dry eye patients we use a custom designed hand piece on both the upper and lower eyelids. This delivers targeted heat to the meibomian glands melting away any blockages and greatly enhancing their function and in turn relieving dry eye symptoms.

The Benefits of RF

  • Enhanced function of the meibomian glands – allowing your eyes to produce more of their own natural lubrication
  • Reduction in fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes
  • New collagen production
  • Reduced eyelid “drooping” – eyelid tightening

During the treatment the hand piece delivers heat to the upper and lower eye lids separately. The sensation is similar to that of a hot stone massage. The treatment lasts about 10 minutes per eye

RF works very quick with some patients noticing relief within 1-2 days for the first session.

We recommend 4 sessions 3 weeks apart.

Many times more than one treatment modality will be recommended by your eye doctor. Other treatments include Intense Pulse Light (IPL) and LipiFlow. Each treatment works via a different mechanism. Outcomes are often enhanced when more the one type of treatment is performed. Outcomes are often enhanced when more the one type of treatment is performed.
