We understand that laser eye surgery is a daunting but exciting step. The Abbey Eye Care team is here to ensure you feel comfortable, confident, and fully informed before making that choice. We consider it our privilege to offer laser eye surgery consultations; answering your questions and explaining your options.
PRK was the first laser refractive surgery ever developed. Because of its tremendous safety profile, it has experienced a recent resurgence in popularity and is still widely used to this day.
PRK is performed by an ophthalmologist who uses a laser to carefully reshape the surface of the cornea. The cornea’s new shape changes the way the eye refracts light, providing the patient with clearer, sharper vision. PRK typically only takes 10 to 15 minutes per eye.
LASIK is currently the world’s most popular type of laser eye surgery. While it accomplishes the same goal as PRK, LASIK provides a different method of accessing and reshaping the cornea.
LASIK begins with the ophthalmologist creating a flap in the outer layer of the cornea, folding it back to reveal the cornea’s middle layers. The ophthalmologist will then reshape the cornea from the middle, rather than the outer layers. Once the desired shape is achieved, the ophthalmologist replaces the flap. LASIK typically only takes 10 to 15 minutes per eye.
Someone will need to drive you home from your procedure, as your vision will be blurry. You must not drive until we have scheduled your follow-up examination and given you permission to do so.
It’s best to avoid strenuous activity for a few weeks after surgery, and take at least one day off of work to recover. Together with your ophthalmologist, we will give you detailed instructions on how to take care of yourself and your eyes after your procedure.
Abbey Eye Care looks forward to serving you and your family. Our office is located on the Southeast corner of Dundas and Third Line.
