Dry Eye Therapy

Dry Eye Disease Shouldn’t Impact Your Daily Life

Dry eye disease can be more than uncomfortable; it can be damaging to your eyes. Abbey Eye Care takes a customised approach to diagnosing and treating dry eye disease. Using a special diagnostic tool called an I-PEN, we can determine the cause of your dry eye. This insight allows us to treat the underlying cause of your symptoms rather than just the symptoms themselves.

What Causes Dry Eye Disease?

Dry eye disease develops as a result of one of two problems: insufficient tear volume or poor tear quality.

Sometimes, the body does not produce enough tears to keep the eye moist and lubricated. Other times, the body does produce enough tears; however, they are unbalanced. There may not be enough oil (called meibum) to create a film on the tears. Without a balanced tear film, the watery tears evaporate from the eye’s surface before they have a chance to lubricate and moisturize the eye.

  • Dryness
  • Irritation (burning or itching sensation)
  • Redness
  • Stringy discharge
  • Foreign body sensation in the eye
  • Sudden watery eyes
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Excess glare (particularly when driving at night)
  • Blurry vision
  • Eye fatigue

Treatments

Punctal plugs are very small biocompatible devices that are inserted into the tear ducts. By blocking the tear duct, the plug prevents tears from draining too quickly.

Restasis is a medicated eye drop prescribed to sufferers of dry eye disease. In addition to offering immediate relief of symptoms, Restasis drops also help stimulate your body’s natural tear production. Restasis is only available by prescription.

Dry eye disease can be impacted by blepharitis; an infection and irritation of the eyelid. BlephEx treats and prevents blepharitis and related dry eye symptoms by cleaning the eyelid and removing the source of the infection. A BlephEx treatment takes place in our office with the use of a small, gentle handheld cleaning tool.
